Career Advising is the Conduit for Workforce Readiness
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has a statewide vision for career planning: Every Ohio student engages in effective K-12 career planning and graduates with a clear career plan.
The Career Pathway Support Network is here to help with the how.
The Career Connections Framework has been updated with new tools and resources to support districts with career advising for students. With these updates, recommendations for layered and continuous support of career exploration have been shared while leaving districts flexibility for execution in the methods best for individual building implementation.

On the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Career Connections Framework webiste, a variety of planning tools are available for districts to begin working internally to assess district practices around career exploration and advising. Ohio’s vision is that every student graduates with a clear, supported career plan.
Check out Ohio’s statewide Quality Career Coaching Approach and the accompanying Career Coaching Handbook to see how this may fit into current district structures, and use the Career Planning Responsibility Delegation Tool to help identify the important supporting roles all school staff have in this work.
Feeling lost in all the terminology? Checkout the ODEW Key Terms in K-12 Career Planning page which gives definitions and descriptions for many of the working concepts of this work.
The new Career Connections Framework Continuum organizes the student journey into four phases-Awareness, Exploration, Preparation, and Participation. These help students build self-knowledge, understand future opportunities, and move toward informed, confident decisions about what comes after high school. Checkout the list of Student Milestones and Experiences to see how each phase can be put into action.
