The following communication was sent from Leah Amstutz, Administrator, Office of Career-Technical Education at the Ohio Department of Education to provide clarity around the requirements for middle grades career-technical coursework implementation for compliance.

Dear CTE Stakeholders,

The Department is committed being responsive to stakeholders as we collectively work to expand middle school career and technical education access to all students.  Based on feedback received, the requirement for courses to be VM coded to meet the requirement in ORC 3313.90 is being rescinded and we are returning to prior guidance where courses coded as VT count toward the requirement.  Please see the updated Middle School CTE FAQ.

As lead CTPDs and CPSNs, please continue to work directly with the districts in your region to ensure they meet the middle school CTE expectation for next school year.

Further, the Department will convene a workgroup to discuss middle school career and technical education implementation as a tool in ensuring students have a robust career exploration experience.

The CTE in middle school expansion is on track to be a tremendous success for the CTE community and students statewide.  We remain excited to continue to partner with superintendents to advance this initiative. Also, we will be sharing more information with you and the district next week. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have further questions.
